The Rumbling Deeps

A great dwarven fortress and Borin's home

The Rumbling Deeps is a great dwarven fortress and the home of Borin, Gloria Sparklebright, and thousands of other dwarves. It is ruled by King Thrumbar the Adequately Bearded.

Structure

The fortress extends deep underground across multiple levels. Notable areas include:

  • The Great Crossing — a major thoroughfare on the second level, used by fuel miners and workers moving between sections. It was here that Borin was assigned his punishment of mopping.
  • The Great Forge — the vast underground forge at the lowest inhabited level, powered by diverted rivers and coke-fired blast furnaces. The industrial heart of dwarven civilization.
  • The Grand Hall — a large communal space where official events are held, including the Ironarm Tournament.
  • The Lower Levels — older, less-traveled passages. Some sections have been forgotten for centuries, including refuse chutes that lead to long-abandoned chambers.
  • The Gardens — an area where Borin's petrified mother Helga stands between the rose bushes and the cabbages.

The Underpeak Academy of Practical Sciences

The fortress houses the Underpeak Academy, a school where young dwarves study subjects like Advanced Rune Studies and Mineralogy. The Academy is overseen by the Grandmaster. Its library contains eleven books — the twelfth was eaten by cave moths in the Year of the Damp.

Hidden Depths

Beneath the known levels lie remnants of an older era. Before the Sundering Compact separated dwarves and humans, human mages lived and worked within dwarven fortresses. At least one such chamber survived deep beneath the Great Crossing — the workshop of a mage named Aldara, complete with a functioning portal.
